The Management Information Systems (MIS) group is a division of Computer Services located in Cheek
Hall. The group consists of database analysts,
systems analysts
and programmer analysts
supervised by the MIS Coordinator.
The group is divided into teams that design, develop, implement, and maintain
computer application systems for the University such as payroll, purchasing, student records, transfer evaluations
and residential life and services. MIS also develops web applications to provide self-service functions for student,
faculty and staff. Notable examples include the
Faculty/Advisor Resource Center,
My Student Information
and My Employee Information. If your department is looking to
purchase a software package, MIS will assist with its selection and installation.
Programming requests are classified and scheduled as maintenance or development projects.
Requests that are mandated by federal regulations, state law, or the Board of Governors receive priority
attention. Other requests are prioritized by the University's administration.
The MIS group supports dozens of different computer application systems
comprised of thousands of programs. Most of the University's transaction processing programs are written with the
COBOL and CICS languages, and run on the IBM iSeries. In addition, many self-service web applications are provided
for students, faculty and staff use. These programs are written in a variety of languages including VBScript, ASP
and COBOL. The University's production data is stored in a relational database management system (RDBMS)
such as DB2 or SQL Server. New systems are being developed exclusively using relational database and most often
as a web-based application.
